I have worked in schools and museums etc for over 20 years-mostly storytelling and running Saxon / Viking workshops. I have also ran craft / puppet making workshops / the art of storytelling and presentation techniques to historical bodies

ABOUT SCHOOLS AND WORKSHOPS

For about 50 mins I give a lively talk and demonstration on how / what weapons / armour were used using the large supply of kit at my disposal. (metal / wood etc replicas of helms, mail, swords, axes,  spears, javelins, slings, arrows etc, and some genuine arrow head / axe head detector finds - thousands of pounds worth of kit). Occasionally members of the audience are invited up to help me (safely) illustrate how a weapon or armour etc would work.

This Exciting and informative workshop was originally developed through working with English Heritage schools visits and developed and expanded for the National Maritime museum, Falmouth through their "Viking Explorers" exhibition. This popular workshop has been ran successfully in schools and other venues including historic sites, fairs and museums across the country (even birthday parties!).

Maximum participants - 40. Area required - Ideally a school hall / sports hall where there is room to set up a shield wall and  manoeuvre. Outside in a playground is good too if it is not raining!

A large classroom is just about possible but not ideal and certain elements of the workshop would have to be curtailed due to lack of space. Sometimes I have ran the main presentation in a classroom but then used a hall/playground for the last 15 minute shield wall part and this has worked well.

This has been a popular addition to my workshops / performances in schools (and elsewhere!) This exciting  version of the Anglo - Saxon poem is perfect for those studying the Anglo - Saxon period or the poem.

VIKING STORYTELLING

A lively hour of Viking tales! Stories about Norse gods and their adventures and a saga about the Jomsvikings. Told in costume. This can be performed to as many children as you can squeeze into a space. Ideal ages 7 and up; though I have done these tales for younger pupils.

BEOWULF

Then, for approx. 15-20 mins following this demo; everyone helps  create a shield wall using the foam latex equipment (children are given equipment to use including helmets, soft hats, well made replica foam / latex axes, swords, spears, shields or saex knife.

The pupils are then put through their paces - forming up / advancing / throwing latex / foam javelins (at me) and
sustaining fire from soft  foam balls from staff members! (All to chanting and war horns blowing).

I can add a Q & A session afterwards if wanted (no extra charge) which allows for a few other items to be shown such as real and reproduction jewellery, fire strikers, spindle weights etc.

I've ran the Weapons and Warfare workshop  for children - ages ideally 7 years up - and adults have enjoyed them too. I can run the weapons and warfare session in a one hour time slot or a more in depth session lasting 1 hour 20 mins (for same price)
